Peter Greenaway is one of the most ambitious and controversial artists of this century and director of more than forty films. His ambition to become a painter faded when he decided to become a film maker after working as a film editor for a brief period. In 1982 he made his breakthrough with the absurd costume drama The Draughtman’s Contract. In 1989 his most accessible film The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover signalled his breakthrough in the United States. Greenaway is now working on his multimedia project The Tulse Luper Suitcases.
The idea of the suitcases also returns in the exhibition in Fort Asperen. Besides being a film maker, Greenaway is also a film critic, documentary maker, writer, theatre maker and composer. An artist with two major obsessions: water and light.
